Our body is made up of trillions of cells and each cell requires nutrients for its proper function. Apart from carbohydrates, fats oils and proteins our body also needs certain essential nutrients in small quantities. They are called as vitamins and minerals.
Vitamins and minerals are needed in several enzymatic reactions and are required in sufficient quantity. For any biochemical reaction a group of vitamins and minerals are required. If any one of them is absent then deficiency results.
Vitamins and health are interrelated. The presence of all vitamins in adequate amount results in good health. Whereas deficiency results in poor health.
Certain vitamins like vitamin c are not made in the body. Deficiency of vitamin c results in a condition called as scurvy. Studies have shown that chronic deficieny of vitamin c and other nutrients results in heart disease, cancer and other chronic diseases.
All vitamins and minerals are sometimes not obtained in sufficient quantity from food. Under these conditions taking them in the form of supplements is advisable.
